Thanks for your links and suggestions for best shows ever poll! It was exactly what I was looking for. Im trying to put together a sort of "final" list for myself. The list that I am GOING to listen to. Shows I can move to a seperate folder, THE iPod list if you will. Im talking about 75 or so shows that no matter where you are or who your are with, you got it. Shows that dont make you listen to two hours of "off" for twenty minutes of "on". Good sound quality is one thing, but im looking for the "blood drippers" to paraphrase Robert Hunter. I spotted a couple of holes in my list Thanks

PS I dont think I saw anyone mention 12/1/79 Pa....

I don't think 12/1/79 is worth mentioning. It may be the most overrated show, period. Maybe it's a tie between this one and 11/1/85. What others consider a classic jam, between He's Gone and C.C. Rider, I call a train wreck. Bob finally pulled them into C.C. Rider after he and Phil tried to start up Gloria, but Jerry, perhaps in a heroin fog, didn't get the message.

It's way too difficult to narrow a list down to just fifteen performance!

I did, however, recently compile a list (I love lists!) of the top twenty shows that I consider to be true "classics" Not necessarily the best performances, just what I consider classics. Note that my very favorite show is not included in this list...

Just to harass Cliff (in a good way): I was at 7 of these shows--and I would list them in my top 15 as well.

Thanks for putting that list together Cliff. 1970 seems to be my least represented year, so I will start checking out your suggestions. Have you listened to any of those 1981 shows yet?

Wow! in the 1 week between asking for 1981 recommendations and posting your top 10 list you listened to and evaluated every one of those shows?

What do think, that I just heard these dogshit shows for the first time a few weeks ago?

I have listened to these shows over many years, I'm 46 years old for chrissakes! I even attended a few of them as well (I attended 8 shows in 1981).

I didnt always have an aversion to the 80's! I had those Melk Weg shows on cassette cack when I was in college, and the Barton show on 5/16 is probably my favorite show of close to 100 that I attended. I also caught 3/9 and 5/6 back when I was a senior in high school, though I surely dont think much of them now, as you can see.

I have always liked the acoustic sets of '81 very much, perhaps even more than those of 1980. And I also have to admit that the Europe tour of fall '81 has its moments as well. The band seemed to have rediscovered itself there, at least for a brief period. And I think my scores for the 80's performances are very fair!

My posts from a few weeks ago regarding 1980 and 1981 were just to see what "experts" like you had to say billydillions...

Cliff, you asked for 1981 recommendations and many people (myself included) responded and took the time to copy & paste the links for you. I was simply asking if you followed through and listened, hoping to elicit a response, although not expecting you to be won over. I've never claimed to be an expert, just a fan of 1980-1982 who has listened to a majority of the shows. I guess I'm a fool to have expected something different from you. I'm sorry that I wasted our time with the recommendations.

Hey Cliff, what about 1982 through 1995? Surely there was something in 13 years that you found entertaining.

And Cliff I know you are not a big fan of much after 1981, but is there really nothing post '81 that you like even a little?

Cliff, it seems a shame to totally disregard 13 years of music. Though this is not officially a Grateful Dead show(It is listed as the first Phil and Friends show.)the 9/24/94 acoustic benefit for the Berkley Music Program is well worth a listen...

Cliff, Rich has a point. This "P&F" acoustic lineup consists of; Phil Lesh, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Vince Welnick. It compares favorably with the acoustic sets of the 70's and 80's, and has become one of my favorite acoustic sets. You should give it a listen. I can't guarantee you're gonna like it, but then what in life is guaranteed?

Bill, after Rich had to point out this set out again in his childish attempt to perpetrate his feud against me because I commented on a show he posted the other day, I did try to listen to it. I'm sorry but I was unable to stick with it. Jer sounds just aweful, and I found Vinces keyboard sound much too annoying...

As Sly once said, "Different strokes for different folks." Glad you at least gave it a try. You can cleanse the palate with the Harpur acoustic set. I think we agree on the relative merits of that one.

It includes all the highest ranked and most often discussed shows, as well as Dicks Picks and commercial releases. Few losers. It's easier to browse and search than the full archive here, and can form the nucleus of a catalog of your own; just replace my notes with your own. I'm happy to email it to you (or anyone else) if you'll contact me at mmiedmonds at gee mail dot com
